Philosophy about birth
Birth is an amazing, beautiful, powerful, spiritual, and transformative
experience! It's also a normal physiological process to be respected,
supported, and interfered with as little as possible. Each pregnancy
and birth, like each mother, baby, and family, is unique.
My job as a midwife is to help you participate actively and responsibly
in your pregnancy and birth experience. You should have as much control
as possible in determining your care. Mothers and families who participate
fully in the birth process can find it an empowering experience.
Not only is birth a physical event, but it is a profound emotional,
mental, and spiritual process. I honor and respect the processes of
pregnancy and childbirth and will treat each client with dignity and
integrity. I work to create a partnership with clients, babies, and
families, and to meet your physical and emotional needs. I feel blessed
and humbled to share this special event.
My Training and Experience
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Women's Health from Hampshire College,
Amherst, MA, and an Associate's Degree in midwifery from the National
College of Midwifery, Taos, NM. I've been fortunate to do my clinical
training in many diverse locations. In Bloomington, Indiana, I apprenticed
with a busy homebirth midwife. In Kingston, Jamaica, I worked at a
high-volume birth center, and in Juneau, Alaska, I worked at the Juneau
Family Birth Center.
I became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in 2002 and a Licensed
Traditional Midwife (LTM) in Minnesota in 2005. In 2007, I became
a Licensed Midwife (LM) in Wisconsin. I started my practice, Heartfelt
Midwifery Services LLC in Winona, MN in 2004, and as of 2007 I have
been to over 150 births and I have been the primary midwife at 52.
About Me
I have lived in Winona and the surrounding area since 2004, and I
feel very blessed to be settled in such a beautiful part of the country.
In addition to midwifery, I enjoy singing, bookbinding, sewing, and
playing my guitar. My partner, a special education teacher, continuously
inspires me to see things in new ways.
Assistants
In addition to having a midwife attend your birth, an
assistant to the midwife will also be present. All of the assistants
who work with Heartfelt Midwifery Services LLC are trained in neonatal
resuscitation and CPR. Several assistants have been doulas or had
homebirth themselves. Occasionally, the assistant may be another midwife
who works in a nearby area. You will have an opportunity to meet the
assistant at the 36 week home visit which takes place about a month
before your due date
